Young Lawyers Salary Survey:  What is Your Market Value in Today’s Economy?
By:  Fort Worth-Tarrant County Young Lawyers Association

In  the  fall  of  2012,  the  Fort  Worth-Tarrant  County  Young  Lawyers  Association (TCYLA) conducted an anonymous and confidential Salary Survey of the young lawyers in Tarrant County, Texas.1   The purpose of conducting the Salary Survey was to inform Tarrant County’s young lawyers of reasonable expectations of their market value in the Tarrant County legal community.   The Salary Survey took into account several factors, such as the lawyer’s years in practice, type of law office, and size of law office, among others.

Out of 875 eligible voters, almost 25%2 responded to the Salary Survey.  The primary categories of information collected include:

• Salary
• Frequency of salary increases
• Bonuses
• Employee benefits
• Vacation
• Partnership track
• Billing clients

Once the data was collected from the Salary Survey, TCYLA reviewed each voter's responses to create categories of information specific to TCYLA members’ individual situations. For example, the Salary Survey details, among other things, the average salary for a young lawyer that has practiced for X years and works in a law firm with Y lawyers.

When reviewing this Salary Survey, please take into consideration that the results are limited to the responses received.  Therefore, some responses may appear skewed because of the responses in that category.  Further, due to the low number of participating part-time and contract attorneys, responses to those questions were not included in this Salary Survey.

Publication of this Salary Survey was funded by a grant from the Texas Young Lawyers Association.  We hope that this Salary Survey provides you with invaluable information about your market value in the Tarrant County legal community.

1 The Salary Survey was created by TCYLA and conducted on October 15, 2012, through November 2, 2012, using a third-party online survey company.  A “young lawyer” is defined as any individual who resides or practices in Tarrant County, Texas, and is thirty-six years of age or younger or has practiced less than ten years.
2 A total of 217 eligible voters responded to this survey.
