TYLA Family Law Committee Helps the Women at Genesis Women's Shelter

The TYLA Family Law Committee held an event at the Genesis Women's Shelter in Dallas on October 14, 2009 to speak about their video entitled Healing the Wounds: A Guide to Navigating the Legal System after Surviving Domestic Abuse and the legal remedies and services that are available to victims of domestic violence. TYLA Family Committee members Kristy Piazza and Sarah Kownacki, TYLA President Cori Harbour, President-Elect Jennifer Evans Morris, and Vice President Natalie Cobb Koehler met with the women at the Genesis Women's Shelter and answered many questions the women had about how to obtain a divorce from an abusive spouse and how to obtain full custody of their children. The TYLA board members also provided toiletry bags to all of the women at the shelter. Often times, when women leave an abusive situation, they have to do so with only the clothes on their back. Therefore, TYLA created backpacks which contained shampoo, conditioner, razors, a hairbrush, soap, and lotion for every woman so that each woman at the shelter could have her own personal toiletries.
