Marie Hejl is a 2003 graduate of University of Texas School of Law, and practices employment litigation at Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C., in Austin, Texas. But if you've already heard of her, it's probably because of her hugely successful cooking show, Cooking With Marie.

Cooking With Marie is an internationally distributed cooking series hosted by Hejl, which is currently broadcast in more than 80 public access markets spanning the United States, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. The show includes guest appearances by Austin's most well-regarded celebrity chefs and lay people alike, all of whom take part in the creation of signature dishes that are both healthy and simple. Combining Hejl's Southern charm with her love of people and cooking, the show offers unique ideas ranging from cooking and entertaining, to strategies for actively pursuing one's personal and professional goals.

Hejl describes Cooking With Marie as a cooking show she began “as a hobby a couple years ago while practicing law” in Austin. “This is actually my second television show,” Hejl explaines. “When I was ten, I hosted Kids Cooking!, a program that aired in Austin for over a decade. Since that time, I have continued to pursue my passion for cooking at home as a child—heavily inspired by my mother's Hispanic roots—through business and law school, and finally as a practicing attorney.”

Cooking With Marie has also garnished substantial critical success. The program was the 2005 first-place recipient of the Austin Film Award for Best Variety Show. Cooking With Marie has also received the River Cities Television “Best Series” award. In November 2006, Austin Monthly's “Food Favorites” issue recognized Hejl as one of the “Top 100 People, Places and Dishes” in Austin. Separately, Hejl recently filmed a guest appearance on The Martha Stewart Show . The episode is scheduled to air on July 26, 2007.

Hejl is clearly proud of her show's success. “In spite of an operating budget of less than $150 per episode, Cooking With Marie has enjoyed tremendous early success,” Hejl states, “quickly becoming the second most widely distributed public access show in the world.”

Notwithstanding the national media attention and international audience, serving the Austin community remains the epicenter of Hejl's work. Her increased visibility in Austin has yielded an effective platform for structuring ongoing partnerships with a number of local charities, including Habitat for Humanity and the Settlement Home for Children. Moreover, donated guest spots on Cooking With Marie have generated tens of thousands of dollars in contributions through local charity auctions.

Hejl serves on the steering committee of Habitat for Humanity's Young Professional's group (“HYP”), where she is the co-chair of the Lunch Brigade. In this role, her work with HYP includes organizing, donating, and cooking lunch for HYP members who assist in the constriction of houses for families in need. In order to better educate her international television audience about Habitat for Humanity, Cooking With Marie filmed an episode on the set of a recent build project.

In the “Habitat Lunch Brigade” episode, Hejl cooked and delivered food to Habitat for Humanity's volunteers, and then interviewed the Vice-Chair of HYP and the Director of Development and Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity's Austin chapter. This partnership is a product of Hejl's efforts to transform the show from a cooking lesson, into a program that features and educates audiences about healthy living and opportunities for community service.

Hejl's varied assortment of accomplishments– personal, professional and civic– have enabled her to serve as a compelling role model for female professionals and students. In this regard, Hejl identifies her work as a mentor to a Hispanic female student at Fulmore Middle School as one of her most rewarding accomplishments since launching Cooking With Marie .

Hejl credits her ability to balance her work, passion and commitment to community service in part to her firm, Ogletree Deakins. “It's a really fantastic firm,” Hejl said. “In addition to having great clients and interesting work, they have allowed me to incorporate my hobby into our client seminars, which we host on a fairly regular basis all over the country. I have a presentation that I have given at several of our seminars where I teach participants how to make a homemade pie crust and analogize each ingredient and step in the process to advice about employment law. We call it ‘A Recipe for Avoiding Litigation.' I never imagined that a firm would be so willing to embrace my hobby in this way, and am endlessly appreciative to the firm for that.”

Hejl characterizes her mission by her dedication to three things: teaching people that cooking healthy food can be an easy and enjoyable activity; preserving the tradition of cooking with family and friends; and inspiring people to do what they love, whether it is cooking or another activity. Clearly, her success demonstrates the success of her mission, and serves as an inspiration to other young attorneys to “follow your passion.”
