Attendance on both days will result in 13.5 hours of CLE credit, including 4.25 hours of ethics. The course will feature diverse topics and presenters that will help Texas young lawyers “survive and thrive” in the practice of law!

There are many common pitfalls that a young lawyer encounters in the first few years of practice. In your personal life it doesn't matter if you return your friend's telephone call or avoid an uninteresting suitor by “screening.” However, in the practice of law, that's not an option. If you don't know how to talk to the clients you have or how to better improve communications, then the “Effective Client Communications” conversation will help equip you to navigate the common mistakes made in the first few years.

If you've decided to be brave and venture out on your own or partner with a colleague or friend, then there are numerous challenges that will arise as the business plan is developed and implemented. The mid afternoon “track two” is for those brave souls – topics as varied as obtaining clients, making the most of limited resources, and advice from those who have started and succeed in going it alone!

There are also real world obstacles that aren't as concrete as “how to communicate” or “negotiation techniques.” Issues such as ethics in the legal workplace and striking a balance in your work and personal life are often new for young lawyers in the workplace and seasoned attorneys are on hand to talk with participants about how to maintain their sanity!

In addition to all this advice for new practitioners, there is a second day that is the time when you can roll up your sleeves and see real practice area dilemmas. The basics of criminal law, simple family law matters, forming a business entity, wills and estates, and pro bono matters are all issues that you will inevitably be confronted with in your first years of practice (whether by your family or in your practice), and this second day is geared to help with the practical application of the law.
