They Had a Dream Too: Young Leaders of the Civil Rights Movement

Every once in a while you get to be part of something that changes the life of one person. The participants interviewed for They Had a Dream Too: Young Leaders of the Civil Rights Movement were part of something that changed a nation. They Had a Dream Too, TYLA’s newest high school curriculum project, is designed to inspire and educate 11th and 12th graders about the important and often little-known role of students, teenagers and children in the Civil Rights Movement.

Funded through a grant from the Texas Bar Foundation, They Had a Dream Too is a multi-media project comprised of a thirty-minute film, a website, and classroom curriculum. Narrated by renowned civil rights leader and current NAACP Chairman, Julian Bond, the film is designed to illustrate the profound impact on history that students had. It is also designed to encourage students to positively change the world around them. Through edgy music, photographs, video, and interviews with actual young leaders from the time, They Had A Dream Too takes students on a ride through the turbulent Civil Rights Movement of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. It introduces students to Terrence Roberts of the “Little Rock Nine,” and teaches them about Ruby Bridges and others who braved integration following Brown v. Board of Education. The film discusses Claudette Colvin, Rosa Parks’ predecessor and inspiration. They Had A Dream Too takes the students to Greensboro to meet Franklin McCain, one of four college freshmen who took a stand by sitting down at a Woolworth’s counter. The students meet Doreen Loury who jumped in a swimming pool to help desegregate public places. Mary Beth Tinker explains why she protested at her school and why her seminal Supreme Court case states that the civil rights of students and teachers do not stop at the schoolhouse gate. John Martin, a Department of Justice Civil Rights Division Lawyer at the time, talks about the Freedom Rides and the struggle for voting rights in the South. The film also walks the students through the Birmingham and Selma Marches. Henry Cisneros and Norma Cantú discuss student action in the Mexican-American Civil Rights movement. In thirty minutes, the students find out what a difference people their age made in shaping our nation.

The website will house the complete interviews of the participants and provide teachers and students with additional information and project ideas. The written curriculum will expand on the information in the film and assist teachers in covering the required TAKS objectives.

As young lawyers, we can help realize the dream by taking this project into our local schools and helping today’s youth realize that their voice counts. The time is ripe for this project as the 2006-2007 school year marks the forty-year anniversary of the signing of portions of the Voting Rights Act and the fifty-year anniversary of when the “Little Rock Nine” first attended Little Rock’s Central High School. With They Had a Dream Too, you can inspire high school students to learn more about laws and legal decisions that affect their lives and to become involved in their communities.
