TYLA Board wraps up the year in the Hill Country

How do the most recognized and awarded group of young lawyers in the country end another productive year? By having a fun and relaxing meeting in the Texas hill country. In late April, the TYLA Board of Directors finished off another stellar year in Horseshoe Bay outside of Austin. The last meeting of the year is a time for the TYLA Board members to show-off all of their projects; the fruits of a years’ worth of hard work. The meeting in Horseshoe Bay was the finale to another unprecedented year of success for the TYLA Board of Directors and all of the non-board committee members whose contribution helped the board achieve all of the goals that were set last summer.

This article would go on and on if I wrote about all of the projects that President Lee Ann Reno had going this year, so I’ll just highlight a few of the show-stoppers. First, off is “Kids in the Crossfire: Helping Parents Understand the Impact of Divorce,” a twenty minute video that was created by the TYLA Family Law Committee, led by Christine Albano of McKinney, and Kristie Wright of Texarkana. This project was unveiled at the Marriage Dissolution Seminar in Austin on April 21, to rave reviews. Family Court judges from across the state were anxious to have copies of this video in their hands and many said they would require all families going through divorce to watch this video.

The Local Leaders Assistance Committee went berserk this year holding Road Shows across the state. The committee, led by Jamey Secrest of Temple, Cheryl Camin of Dallas, and Dan Peugh of Denton, zipped from El Paso to Texarkana, and all points in between, to provide free CLE and lunch to TYLA local affiliates. The Road Shows are TYLA’s way of bringing programming and funding to the YLA’s across the state which may need a boost in membership, or just may need a jump start. This year, the Road Show made a stop in Lufkin to help a new group of young lawyers, the East Texas Young Lawyers Association, TYLA’s newest young lawyer affiliate and we wanted to extend a TYLA welcome to their leaders and their members.

On March 3, TYLA unveiled a new CLE aimed at mid-level lawyers, called Crossroads. The seminar offered the attendees the chance to participate in sessions that would help them find a balance between their career and family, financial planning tips, and tips about starting their own practice. The Local Affiliates Committee, lead by Jennifer Evans Morris from Dallas, wanted the CLE to be beneficial to a wide variety of lawyers. They developed the seminar format to allow the attendees to select the sessions that were most meaningful to their individual concerns, while providing a one-on-one session with the experts on a variety of different areas. The seminar was hugely successful and TYLA plans to have another Crossroads seminar in another city in the fall. This was a new project that Lee Ann Reno, President of TYLA, wanted to offer the young lawyers of Texas, and if the success of the seminar in Dallas is any indication of the success it will have in other cities, then this seminar will undoubtedly go down as one of TYLA’s most valuable services to our members.

The meeting concluded with the announcement of the recipients of the Outstanding Director Award and the President’s Award. Each year, the TYLA president has the difficult task of naming the directors who exceed their duties as board members. As you can probably understand, this is not an easy task when you consider the group of overachievers and multi-taskers on the TYLA board. This year was no exception. President Lee Ann Reno determined that the Outstanding Director Award should go to Christine Albano of McKinney, for her tireless efforts on “Kids in the Crossfire: Helping Parents Understand the Impact of Divorce.” Christine went above and beyond the call of duty for this project and for TYLA, and the Outstanding Director Award and Christine Albano go hand-in-hand. Congratulations Christy! The President’s Award is equally as prestigious as the Outstanding Director Award, and this year it is being awarded to Jamey Secrest of Temple. From the Road Shows to “Kids in the Crossfire,” to providing the live music at the board meeting social events, the Jamey Secrest stamp was everywhere. Even more remarkable is the fact that Jamey Secrest is a first-year TYLA director. I know the board is anxious to see what Jamey has in store for next year. Congratulations Jamey!

The final TYLA board meeting of the year gave us the opportunity to thank our fearless leader, Lee Ann Reno of Amarillo, for her tireless efforts, vision, and encouragement this year. For those of you who don’t know how this works, the President of TYLA has a vision for what he or she wants to accomplish. Dwight Eisenhower once said, “Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.” In my opinion, that’s what Lee Ann Reno did for TYLA this year. She inspired us with her ideas and vision, yet gave us the freedom and resources that allowed us to take ownership of her ideas and turn them the kinds of products and programs that TYLA is know for and for which TYLA is extremely proud. Thanks Lee Ann! And thank you to all of the young lawyers who made this year so successful.
