Driving Home the Message of Access to Justice

Cars. Most of us have them. Most of us spend quite a bit of time in them, driving to work, home, school, recreational activities. But how many of us utilize our vehicles to promote noteworthy messages? Well, now’s your chance!

For the low price of $30, you can purchase the “And Justice for All” specialty license plate for your car, demonstrating your commitment to equal justice under the law. Proceeds from sale of the plate ($22) go to the Texas Equal Access to Justice Foundation and benefit civil legal aid in Texas.

The Texas Equal Access to Justice Foundation grants funds to nonprofit organizations that provide civil legal services to poor Texans. The grants assist legal aid providers with operating costs such as staff and equipment needs. Additionally, the funds can be allocated for legal clinics and technological improvements to better serve legal aid clients. During a time when funding for legal aid is in decline, programs such as the “And Justice for All” license plate serve as innovative methods to increase funding.

The “And Justice for All” specialty plate was initiated by the Texas Young Lawyers Association through the Texas Department of Transportation. The program has been successful, generating an average of $1800 a month for legal aid. That’s an average of 81 plates being purchased each month.

While the Foundation and the Texas Access to Justice Commission are encouraged by the success of the license plate program, we believe more can be done, particularly by those of us in the legal profession. We urge you to visit www.tyla.org, click on the license plate and order the plate for your vehicle. Help us double or even triple this funding source to ensure that more Texans have access to the civil justice system.
