A Challenge to Young Lawyers: Support Access to Justice
through State Bar Dues Statement

By Heather Way, Access to Justice Liaison and Andrew Strong, TYLA President - Last year, young lawyers gave $180,000 of the more than $1 million donated by Texas attorneys through the Access to Justice voluntary contribution on the State Bar dues statement. These contributions directly supported programs that provide legal aid for low-income Texans who otherwise would receive no legal assistance.

Law of the Land - Know Your Rights!

By Patsy Yung and Mary Reveles - While pro bono services are vigorously promoted at legal aid clinics around Texas, it continues to be a challenge to help everyone who needs such service. Frequently, individuals are unaware of their legal rights and responsibilities. Thus they encounter financial hardships when attempting to resolve or defend against legal matters that could have been avoided. Those without adequate resources to consult an attorney often turn to legal aid clinics for assistance. (more info)

W.J. "Dub" Wade - Lubbock
Dub Wade, president of the Lubbock Young Lawyers Association, is an associate with the Lubbock law firm of Clifford, Field, Krier, Manning, Stone & Wilkerson, P.C.

Although born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Dub grew up in Lubbock. Dub is an Eagle Scout and is a big supporter of the Boy Scouts. He attended Texas A&M University, where he majored in History, minored in Spanish, and built bonfires when that was still a thing you could do. After graduating from A&M in 1989, Dub enrolled in law school at Texas Tech. He graduated from Tech in 1992. (Click here for full article.)


HYLA's Animal Welfare Committee

By Laney Vazquez - A lawyer is an advocate, one that pleads the cause of another. The term “advocate” stems from the Latin vocare, which means to call, as with a voice. When a lawyer advocates for animal welfare, he or she is truly providing a voice for the voiceless. (continued)

Through the years, colleagues and adversaries will assess not only your competence, but also your professionalism. It is no mistake that those attorneys who adhere to specific values and principles within the realm of advocacy find themselves highly sought after by clients, and strongly recommended by their colleagues. TYLA Officers Elected for 2003-2004

The TYLA Board of Directors recently elected officers for 2003-2004. The new officers are:
Vice President: Lee Ann Reno, Amarillo. Chair-elect: Greg Jackson, Fort Worth. Secretary: Karin Crump, Dallas. Treasurer: Mary Reveles, Richmond.

Additionally, the following current officers will ascend to these positions: President: Marshall Wood, Texarkana; Chair: Laura Beckman, Houston; Immediate Past President: Andrew Strong, Houston.
