Although
Hurricane Katrina managed to miss the Texas coast, its devastating
effects have definitely had an impact here in Texas. The New
Orleans residents who braved the storm in the Superdome are
being relocated to the Astrodome. Houston
hotels are totally booked and disaster shelters have cropped
up all over the state, including areas as far away as Dallas
and Austin. What is the legal community doing? What
can you do? (continued)
The
results are in ... and Texas young lawyer bar associations
are the winners!
Each
year the ABA-YLD sponsors a National Awards of Achievement
Competition, where the public service and member
service projects of bar associations from around the country
are reviewed and judged. Bar associations of like size compete
against each other. Beyond recognition for bar leaders' hard
work on excellent service projects, it is also a great source
of ideas. A great project in one state can often be duplicated
easily again in another state.
TYLA
and TYLA's Local Affiliates dominated the awards in their
respective categories. TYLA's Ten Minute Mentor
was named overall Most Outstanding Single Project
Service to the Bar. Awards were announced (see
full results) at the ABA-YLD annual meeting in
Chicago. (Continued).

Merritt, Austin YLA

Kendyl Hanks Darby -
Laura Merritt, who recently took office as the President of
the Austin Young Lawyers Association (“AYLA”),
has the sort of curriculum vitae that makes you wonder
if she has a secret stash of time hidden away—otherwise
it’s hard to explain how she fits it all in. Merritt
practices as a labor and employment attorney with Wilson Sonsini
Goodrich & Rosati in Austin, where she specializes in
advising and representing technology and growth companies
in all areas of labor and employment law. Merritt took office
as AYLA’s new President at the end of June 2005. As
AYLA President, she also serves on the Austin Bar Association
board. (continued)

Cordell Parvin Has The Answer
By David Navarro -
Justice
Sandra Day O’Connor told an audience-filled stadium
at the University of Wyoming Concert Hall that today’s
lawyers are “an unhappy lot,” and many of them
wish they had gone into some other line of work. I had heard
this quote before, but I never knew the author. Even as a
young attorney, this was no surprising revelation as I know
many colleagues (some just two years out of law school) who
wish they had chosen a different career path. To avoid falling
into the “unhappy lot” category, career coach
Cordell Parvin has some suggestions. (continued)
Tips for Young Lawyers
Lessons from the Other Side of the Bar
Lawyers
are always trying to make their cases, whether it’s

a jury. We rarely get to know what it’s like to be on
the receiving end. When I was selected to serve on a jury
recently, I learned five important lessons about a juror’s
perspective that can benefit all lawyers: (continued)
