Efforts
By

In
the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina,
state and local bar associations immediately
began to organize massive relief efforts
in Texas to assist disaster victims.
Now in the wake of Hurricane Rita,
which caused heavy damage and destruction
in eastern Texas and western Louisiana,
TYLA is again mobilizing to provide
assistance to those in need. Here's
an update on what has been done and
what lies ahead--thank you for your
help thus far!(Cont.)

Becoming
a Rainmaker!
(Houston
Date Rescheduled for November
1, 2005)

Despite
the bad timing of this very timely
seminar, nearly 200 Texas attorneys
in Dallas and Austin were able
to attend the TYLA-hosted seminar
Becoming a Rainmaker!
The seminar was designed for attorneys
wanting to grow their practice,
and included practical marketing
strategies and tips.
Presenter
Stephen Fairley, a nationally
acclaimed marketing coach, specializes
in helping professional service
firms increase revenues and find
new clients ... particularly clients
that are the right fit for the
firm. Attorneys who attended the
seminars in Texas were guided
through the process of focusing
on firm goals to direct client
search.
The
Houston seminar, originally set
for September 21 (the Wednesday
of the Hurricane Rita evacuations),
has been rescheduled for Tuesday,
November 1, 2005.
The event will be held at the
same time (6:00 - 8:00 pm) and
location (Sheraton Suites near
the Galleria). Registrations from
the postponed event are automatically
transferred to the new date. Limited
space is still available for additional
registrations. (Register

Terra
Bay - Cameron County Young Lawyers
Association
By Kelly-Ann Clarke
-
Born
and raised in Columbus, Ohio,
die-hard Buckeye fan Terra Bay
now calls Brownsville, Cameron
County, Texas home. Her family
still lives in Ohio. Bay’s
father owns a grocery store and
maintains the family farm with
her grandmother in a small farming
community. Her mother, a home
healthcare nurse, lives outside
Columbus, Ohio. Her older sister
teaches art at an elementary school
and lives with her husband and
two children in Sidney, Ohio.
With so many roots in Ohio, how
did Bay, President of the Cameron
County Young Lawyers Association
(“CCYLA”), meander
down to the most southern part
of Texas on the Mexican Border?

The
Battle with E-Discovery:
Proposed Amendments to the Federal
Rules of Procedure
By Altresha Q. Burchett
Over
2 billion electronic messages are
sent by Americans daily, and there
is a 90-to-1 ratio of electronic
mail compared to postal mail in
an average business organization.
Therefore, it is not uncommon for
a large company to store approximately
400 billion typewritten pages of
electronic information in its database.
In the context of business litigation,
this vast quantity of electronic
documents is fertile ground for
litigants seeking information. Electronic
documents and materials, such as
e-mail, are an increasingly frequent
part of discovery. With this in
mind, the Advisory Committee on
Civil Rules submitted to the Standing
Committee on Rules of Practice and
Procedure proposed amendments to
the Federal Rules of Civil Procedures
to help secure “the just,
speedy, and inexpensive determination
of every action.” (Cont.)

October 21, 2005, through late January
2006. The exhibit provides a rare
glimpse inside the detention of immigrants,
as captured by photojournalist Steven
Rubin, and highlights the
urgent need for pro bono efforts in
the representation of individuals
facing deportation. HYLA is sponsoring
an Opening Night Reception,
which will include Rubin as the guest
