    Older Lawyers Are Young Again!

During the TYLA Annual Meeting in June, members unanimously approved a by-law change to expand TYLA membership to include lawyers over the age of 36, but still within their first 5 year of licensure. Before the by-laws were amended, only lawyers over 36 years of age and within 3 years of licensure as well as the traditional “young” lawyer who was 36 or younger received the benefits of TYLA membership. Chief Justice Jefferson swears-in Karin Crump as TYLA President and Gindi Eckel Vincent becomes Chair of the Board

On June 16, 2006, Chief Justice B. Wallace Jefferson swore in Karin Crump of Austin as the 80th president of the Texas Young Lawyers Association, and only the 5th woman president since the organization's creation in 1930. The ceremony took place at the Austin Hilton Hotel during TYLA's Annual Meeting. Former and current members of TYLA gathered to applaud outgoing President Lee Ann Reno of Amarillo and outgoing Chair William ("Bill") Miller of Texarkana, as well as to support the succeeding leadership of Karin Crump and Chair Gindi Eckel Vincent of Houston . Bill Miller passed the gavel to Gindi Eckel Vincent, who ascended to the position of Chair.

The meeting was also the venue for President Lee Ann Reno to recognize the lawyers of her board who made a significant impact to the projects that were only an idea at this time last year. (Cont.)

TYLA Board wraps up the year in the Hill Country

How do the most recognized and awarded group of young lawyers in the country end another productive year? By having a fun and relaxing meeting in the Texas hill country. In late April, the TYLA Board of Directors finished off another stellar year in Horseshoe Bay outside of Austin. The last meeting of the year is a time for the TYLA Board members to show-off all of their projects; the fruits of a years' worth of hard work. The meeting in Horseshoe Bay was the finale to another unprecedented year of success for the TYLA Board of Directors and all of the non-board committee members whose contribution helped the board achieve all of the goals that were set last summer. St. Mary's Law School Wins TYLA's State Moot Court Competition

TYLA conducted its annual State Moot Court competition last month during the State Bar Annual Meeting. As in the past, State Moot was a success. This year the problem was a civil case concerning a putative parenting contract between a birth-mother and a donor-father.

Seven law schools from around Texas participated in the three day event: Baylor, Houston, St. Mary's , South Texas College of Law, Southern Methodist, Texas Tech, and Texas Wesleyan. (Cont.)

    Tips for Young Lawyers

    IOLTA Attorney Compliance Goes Online!
Electronic compliance process could mean more money for legal aid. The Supreme Court of Texas requires that every licensed Texas attorney submit IOLTA compliance information each year to the Texas Equal Access to Justice Foundation, regardless of whether the attorney handles IOLTA funds. This year, Texas attorneys can submit their mandatory IOLTA compliance information online at www.teajf.org beginning May 1. (Cont.)

    TYLA/ProBAR Children's Project

Each year, hundreds of unaccompanied children reach the Texas border
after fleeing abuse, neglect or persecution in their home countries. Without adequate legal representation, these children remain in detention, unable to navigate the complicated immigration system and facing almost certain deportation.

Attorneys are needed to assist TYLA and the South Texas Pro Bono
Asylum Representation Project (ProBAR) provide legal services to immigrants,
including children, who are detained in South Texas. TYLA and ProBAR
are recruiting and training volunteer attorneys, law students and
legal assistants to assist with the Project.
