Don't Worry, the Second Mouse Gets the Cheese
    By Ken Riney

President Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “I think we consider too much the good luck of the early bird and not enough the bad luck of the early worm.” In these tough economic times, I suspect most young lawyers are identifying more with the early worm than the early bird. Whether you are a recent law school graduate still looking for a job or a young lawyer who just opened your latest 401(k) statement, it is tempting to have a pessimistic view of the future. However, as young lawyers, we must realize that we have the ability to make a difference in helping ourselves and others have an optimistic outlook of the future.(Cont.)

    Mentoring Law Students
    By Sylvia Cardona

New Year's is supposed to be an exciting time. We ponder resolutions and set goals with great expectations in mind. So why does the start of this year seem different?

To many of us, 2009 is starting out against a backdrop of challenges and uncertainty. An economic crisis is at the forefront of issues facing the nation. Lawyers are asking themselves: Will my business stay afloat? What will happen to my practice area? Will there be a decline in the need for the legal services I offer? No doubt these uncertainties are contributing to the stresses that all of us as lawyers feel. (Cont.)

    Tenants' Rights Handbook
    By Geoff A. Gannaway

TYLA is pleased to announce an updated version of its Tenants' Rights Handbook will soon be available to Texans.

TYLA takes great pride in providing informational resources to Texas citizens and members of the legal profession. A number of TYLA publications provide crucial information on subjects ranging from instituting a suit in small-claims court to providing Texas consumers with information concerning the remediation of water damage and mold. Among those noteworthy publications is the Tenants' Rights Handbook, which specifically addresses the rights, obligations and legal remedies available those individuals leasing or renting houses or apartments in Texas. Tips for Young Lawyers

The Road To Financial Freedom - What Every Young Lawyer Should Know
    By Meggan C. Burchfield

Now more than ever, law students are graduating with tremendous amounts of debt. The American Bar Association estimates that 44,000 law school students will graduate this year with an average of $73,000 in law school debt. It is a staggering number, especially considering that the number does not account for undergraduate student loan debt or credit card debt.

The debt that you accumulated during law school may seem insurmountable, and as a result, your first instinct may be total avoidance. However, avoidance will only push you deeper into debt, which is damaging both personally and professionally. Excessive debt can affect your relationships with your family and your productivity at work. It may even keep you from pursuing your goals and dreams because you are stuck living paycheck to paycheck in order to stay ahead of what you owe. The following are some basic financial principles that young lawyers should consider as they start their new careers. (Cont.)

A $700 Billion Bailout, or a $700 Billion Blank Check?
    By Sarah Hodges

Just months after it was signed into law, the $700 billion “Troubled Asset Relief Program” has begun to look more like a blank check than a principled delegation of Congressional authority. In fact, the Act's language is so broad that some scholars have suggested it might violate the nondelegation doctrine, which had its heyday when the Supreme Court relied on the doctrine to strike down New Deal legislation in the mid-1930s.
