nominated President-elect candidates

with San Antonio young lawyers
at the TYLA board meeting dinner. |
|
The
scenic and historic city of San
Antonio was the backdrop for the
Texas Young Lawyers Association’s
most recent board meeting, which
provided an opportunity for the
board to hear an update on TYLA's
service projects and meet the State
Bar President-elect candidates.
TYLA
ELECTIONS
As
every year, the highlight of TYLA’s
winter meeting was the nomination
of candidates for TYLA officer positions.
Except for the President-elect,
who is elected by the general membership
in the State Bar’s statewide
election, TYLA officers are elected
by the current members of the TYLA
board of directors.
President-elect
candidates are Tal
Hammock (Texas City) and
Bill Miller (Texarkana).
Under TYLA bylaws, this year's president-elect
candidates were required to be from
small cities in Texas. President-elect
candidates are elected from the
general membership of TYLA. They
may begin outside campaigning on
March 1, 2006, and will be featured
in the March issue of the eNews.
The
other TYLA
officers are elected by the sitting
board of directors. Officer candidates
for FY '06-'07 are:
-
Chair-elect:
Cade Browning
(Abilene) and Mary Reveles
(Richmond)
-
Vice
President: Cheryl
Camin (Dallas) and Jennifer
Morris (Dallas)
-
Secretary:
Christine Albano
(McKinney) and Jamey Secrest
(Temple)
-
Treasurer:
C.E. Rhodes (Houston)
and Lisa Richardson
(Austin)
This
year's President-elect Karin
Crump (Austin) and Chair-elect
Gindi Eckel (Houston) will ascend
to the offices of President and Chair,
respectively.

| Walker
Crowson |
|
For Walker Crowson,
President of the El Paso Young
Lawyers, law is a family affair.
He practices law at Crowson
& Crowson, LLP with his
partner (and father) Junior
Crowson. His wife Jennifer is
general counsel for Trans-Expedite,
Inc. in El Paso. Her father
is also a lawyer, as is Walker’s
sister-in-law Kelly Crowson
(married to Walker’s brother
Matt). Needless to say, the
Crowsons have a lock on the
legal market in El Paso. (Cont.)
TYLA's Member Services
Committee in partnership with TexasBarCLE
has developed a new seminar designed
exclusively for mid-level lawyers.
The purpose of the seminar is to
help attorneys who have been in
practice for five to 10 years and
may be facing a career crossroads.
The seminar, which
takes place March 3, 2006,
in Dallas offers unique programming
tailored to individuals who may
be considering a career transition
... whether it be a lateral move,
a promotion, opening a solo practice,
or even a departure from the practice
of law. Attendees may sign up for
one-on-one sessions with any of
five experts in the fields of career
planning, financial planning, and
law practice management. Programming
will also include small group discussions.

Teams Up with Hoops 4 Hope in Africa

Hoops
4 Hope - TYLA Court |
|
While accustomed to recognition
for its service projects on this
side of the Atlantic, the Texas
Young Lawyers Association was surprised
to learn that it was recently recognized
for its efforts across the ocean.
TYLA board members teamed up with
Hoops 4 Hope, an
international nonprofit organization,
to build a basketball court at a
primary school in an impoverished
township outside of Cape Town, South
Africa.
Reminiscent of the Aspiring
Youth Program, Hoops 4
Hope teaches life skills to children
in an after-school environment—keeping
them off the streets and out of
danger while providing a positive
experience for them. What attracts
children to participate in these
programs? Instruction in the fastest
growing sport in southern Africa—basketball.

The
Dos and Don'ts of Motions for New
Trial in Criminal Cases
By
David
C. Newell,
Assistant District Attorney, Fort
Bend County -
Courts generally regard
the 30 days after a defendant is
sentenced as a critical stage of
a criminal proceeding. Unfortunately,
many attorneys start acting as if
their criminal case is like a commercial
for “Life” cereal, and
they keep passing the “bowl”
back and forth until “Mikey”
has run out of time to file anything
(no matter how much he’d like
to). For those that do undertake
filing a motion for new trial, there
are various pitfalls that the new
practitioner should be aware of,
lest he or she finds him or herself
in that perpetual syndication known
as habeas corpus. This article attempts
to address some of these procedural
issues without spending much time
on the substantive grounds for new
trial. (Cont.)
