Houston Young Lawyers Host Car Seat Safety Checkup
    By Regina K. Ibarra

    Houston Young Lawyers Association

Motor vehicle accidents are a leading cause of death among children above the age of one, and it is estimated that eighty to ninety percent of child safety seats are not properly fitted in passenger vehicles.  To address this need, the Houston Young Lawyers Association got involved. HYLA's Car Seat Safety Campaign Committee partnered with the Houston coalition of Safe Kids U.S.A. and the retail store Babies "R" Us to coordinate and host HYLA's first Car Seat Safety Checkup Event on Saturday, October 27th from 10 am - 2 pm in the parking lot of the Babies "R" Us store located on Hollister Road near Hwy 290.

TYLA Unveils Justice 101: The Client's Guide To Litigation
    By Kristie Wright

A great new DVD, Justice 101: The Client's Guide to Litigation, designed to help clients gain a basic understanding of the civil litigation system, is now available! Recognizing that the world of litigation is foreign to most people, and that those entering into a lawsuit for the first time are often overwhelmed, the TYLA Member Services Committee set out to provide a resource for attorneys that would give their clients a roadmap to the process. Justice 101 gives an overview of topics such as attorney fees, pleadings, the attorney-client relationship, discovery, trial, and appeal. The 20 minute program is broad enough to be helpful in virtually any kind of litigation and will also provide a starting point for both attorney and client to come to a mutual understanding of what their particular case might involve. Tips for Young Lawyers

    Career Sucess and Life Fulfillment
    By Cordell Parvin

    Cordell Parvin

I have always enjoyed trying to understand why some people are very successful and why others are not. Interestingly, I have found many of the most successful people also have greater fulfillment in their personal and family lives. How can this be so? Put simply, they understand both their career and life priorities, they develop a plan based on these priorities, and they use their time wisely. Most of us start our law careers with great enthusiasm and then, to borrow a phrase from a new Seth Godin book, “we hit the dip”. This clarity of career and life priorities helps successful lawyers get through the dips. (Cont.)

Chronicles of a New Texas Young Lawyer
    By Abbey Akin, Dallas

    Abbey Akin and Bill Miller

In hindsight, graduating from law school is perhaps one of the most anticlimactic days for a law student. By the third year, most of us had figured out how to write a law school exam without worry of failing. During the final semester most of us were eagerly looking to the future, whether it be a job we already had or the one we wanted to get. Then comes the day after graduation when the realization hits that it does not matter what you did in law school or wanted to do in the future, there was still something very large looming, The Bar Exam. As it turns out, studying and waiting for bar results would be all consuming for the next seven months.(Cont.)

July Bar Exam Top Scorers Deliver Inspiration:

Bill Miller, Stephen Long, Sylvia Cardona and Susan Cannon

After each bar exam, the Supreme Court of Texas recognizes the top
individual scorer by inviting him or her to offer a Response on behalf of
the new licensees at the Induction Ceremony for New Members of the State Bar
of Texas held biannually at Austin's Frank Erwin Center. This is an
opportunity for a representative of our newest class of young lawyers to
offer congratulations and encouragement to their fellow inductees, and to
provide praise and thanks to those that helped each of our new young lawyers
reach this important milestone. This year, we were honored to have two top
scorers: Susan Lynn Cannon and Stephen Long. You can read the
transcripts of their speeches by following the links below.
